How this started
Loren Alves

It took an old hippie and a $500-a-day habit to get me to Jesus.

I was 19 and out of options. A $500-a-day habit I couldn't stop on my own. I didn't want to keep living the way I was living. Truth is, I didn't want to live at all.
And when I finally quit it, I just pivoted. I'll only drink. I'll only smoke dope. I'll only take acid and smoke dope. I'll only binge a little cocaine. Nine months of that taught me what takes some people decades: the problem was never the substance. My drug of choice was always more.
An old hippie in AA asked me one question. "You got a problem with God?" I said no. He said, "Great. Get on your knees every morning and ask God to keep you sober. At night, tell Him thank you." No church background. No religion. I was just desperate enough to follow instructions. That was 1991. I've been sober ever since.
How I actually met Jesus
God wasn't done — He was drawing. Years into walking with Jesus, I finally found the verse that explained my whole story. John 6:44 — no one can come to Jesus unless the Father draws him. That was me — nine years in the rooms, rejecting Him, and the Father drawing me anyway.
For years I prayed to a higher power that kept me sober but had no eternity attached to it. I was even a little offended — why did I need the Son when I figured I was already talking to the Boss? Then came Sidney. And the only guarantee I'd ever heard that I'd see my little girl again was Jesus. On July 17th, 2000, I surrendered — not because I had the answers, but because I was desperate for hope.
Then Sidney showed me what God does with “impossible.” The diagnosis came in July — one chamber in her tiny heart doing the work of four, and no medical reason she'd survive the womb another week. She grew anyway. Through August. Through September. The doctors had no explanation for it. She was born October 2nd, 2000, and she lived five hours. Five hours — and out of that short little life God launched a ministry that reached tens of thousands of people over the next five, six years. I carry Sidney's memory with honor, not shame. Her heartbeat is the reason I found Jesus, and the reason so many others did too.
The long way back
God sent reinforcements before I knew I'd need them. In 2016 He brought Jackie into my life — we both came into it sober, me since '91, her since 2013 — and we both knew we were called to more than just loving each other. One year into our marriage, the bottom dropped out.
And God kept restoring what life kept breaking. In 2017 a toxic brain injury scrambled the very mind these declarations are built to renew. For three or four years I couldn't think straight, couldn't find my words, couldn't even feel God. That last one was the scariest — the sense that His presence was just gone. One day I prayed, “Jesus, I just don't feel like You're here anymore.” No audible voice came back. But something landed deep in my soul, and it was Him: I'm a person, not a feeling. Just because you don't feel Me doesn't mean I'm not here. I wrapped both arms around that and held on. And I wasn't holding on alone. Jackie didn't always understand what was happening to me — half the time she didn't know what to do. But she stood. Her faith and her relentless prayers were weapons in a war I didn't have the strength to fight. Jesus was my anchor. Jackie was the hands that kept me tied to it.
I held that anchor for four, five years — until I finally let go of whatever the injury took. Whatever's gone is gone. I made peace with the man God rebuilt, and I'm fine with who He renewed me to be. Then in 2023 the strokes came — another test. But by then Jackie and I knew how to fight — with prayer, with the Word — and we stood together. I'm still here: thirty-five years sober, mind renewed daily by the same Word that's in this app. Restoration isn't a theory to me. It's my history. And I didn't walk a step of it alone.

It Is Written

How Jesus used declarations.

1The enemy waits till you're empty

Forty days, no food, worn all the way down — that's when the enemy showed up on Jesus in the desert. Matthew chapter four. He comes when you're tired, hungry, and alone. Nothing new about that. It happened to Jesus first.

2Jesus didn't argue. He declared.

Three times the enemy pushed. Three times Jesus didn't debate it and didn't white-knuckle it. He said three words — “It is written” — and spoke the Word of God out loud, right back at him. He didn't fight with feelings. He fought with what was already written down.

3That's what you're doing here

You don't have to feel strong. You don't have to win the argument in your head. You find what God already said about you, and you say it out loud — same as Jesus did. That's a declaration. It is written. So you stand on it.

Declarations vs. affirmations

Why out loud matters.

1One leans on you. One leans on God.

An affirmation says “I am enough, I am strong” — and it's asking you to be the power source. A declaration says “God already called me His, and the blood already sealed it.” One runs on your tank. The other runs on His. That's why one runs out and the other doesn't.

2Out loud is not a suggestion

Romans chapter twelve, verse two says be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Here's the loop: your mouth says it, your ears hear it, and your mind hears it enough times that it finally believes it. Silent skips the loop. Out loud runs it. That's why we speak these — every time.

3You're not making it true. You're agreeing with it.

You're not naming something new into being. God already said it. You're just catching up — lining your mouth up with what heaven already wrote down. Say it enough, and the mind renews. That's not hype. That's how God built you.
